Getting up to speedGetting up to speed

All employees or conference delegates can be instructed in how to use Second Life by guides from our sister-site sltourguides.com. Anyone with basic computer skills will be able to manage and the tuition will take between 30 minutes and one hour.

  • Second Life requires a cable or a DSL connection. The faster the better. Satellite and dial-up will not work.
  • For a good Second Life experience your graphics card will need to be an nVidia GeForce FX 5600, GeForce 6600, or better OR ATI Radeon 9600, X600, or better. The more up-to-date and high powered your graphics card, the better. Brands other than nVidia and ATI probably won’t work. If you are in doubt about your video card, check the Second Life System Specs. Guest log-in required.
  • The processor should be a 1.6GHz Pentium 4 or Athlon 2000+ or better with 512MB of RAM. The faster your processor and the more RAM the better.
  • If you own a MAC, you’ll need Mac OSX 10.4.3 or better. You’ll need a processor speed of at least 1.25 GHz G4 or better and RAM of 768MB or better. More powerful = better.
  • Configure your firewall. Second Life needs to connect to ports 443/TCP, 12035/UDP, 12036/UDP, 12043/TCP, and 13000-13050/UDP. You should configure your firewall to allow outbound traffic on those ports, and related inbound traffic. For more information on firewalls, visit the Second Life Support Page and type "firewall" into the Knowledge Base Search box.
